The Thematic Cultural Network “Science and Sports” is organized by the Department of Cultural Education of Achaia and the Science and Technology Museum. Sports is one of the big issues that involve society and is especially popular with many children and adolescents. Sports are studied and analyzed by scientific research in various fields such as biology, biomechanics, physics and materials chemistry, fluid mechanics, modeling, humanities and social sciences. The topic enables us to approach science through sports,  in a more accessible and enjoyable way.

Objectives of the Network:

  • Contribute to the understanding of the relationship of science with sports.
  • Students to understand that every movement in sports is governed by laws that can be explained through science.
  • Familiarization of students with science through sports is a subject very endearing for a large portion of teenagers.
  • To acquaint students with the possibilities provided by science and technology to improve performance in various sports or to support people with special needs. Awareness of the positive and negative effects of these possibilities.

Objectives of the network

The Network provides for joint actions, as well as actions that are individual for each group. Teachers can choose to work with their students on one of the suggested topics, choosing the methodology and way to work with their team.

Suggested topics: Decipherment of sports movement, modeling of sports movement, peculiarities of champions, the contribution of technology to the improvement of champions and access to sports for people with disabilities, the marathon runner: an oxygen column, we swim upside down in the current, bicycle, sailboats, ball, materials used in sports.

Proposed joint actions within the network:

  • Participation in an educational activity in the temporary exhibition 'Science and Sports', at the Science and Technology Museum in collaboration with the French Institute of Patras.
  • Participation in the Event for the Celebration of the Francophonie, where the students will present their work within the framework of the Network and will talk via teleconference in French with an important French athlete.
  • Participation in the Event for the Celebration of the European Night of Museums where all the works to be presented will have taken place within the framework of the network.
