Automatic Telephone Exchange type Strowger

The invention of the Automatic Rotary Dial changed the form of telephony from manual to automatic. Until 1880, telephony was operated manually and supported by telephone operators.

Almon Strowger (1839-1902), an undertaker in Kansas City, USA, had the misfortune of having a telephone operator's husband compete with him and she referred his clients to her husband. In desperation, Strowger decided to experiment and succeeded in building the first Automatic Telephone Exchange in 1889. The automatic telephone exchange made it possible, by dialing the number on the rotary dial of the device, to automatically connect with the other party without the intervention of an operator.
